Rebuild a big block engine

One of the most remarkable engine ranges ever built was the Chevy Big Block V8, which had capacities ranging from 350 to 502 cubic inches. These were big and heavy engines, of pretty basic design.

At first, in the late 50s, Chevrolet used a combustion chamber partly in the cylinder instead of in the cylinder head, but this was changed to an ordinary chamber in the Mark IV engines which went into GM’s cars in 1965. By then, the smallest V-8 in the series had increased to 396 cu in.

There was nothing special about these engines,, but they were strong, although they don’t measure up to in power, gas mileage or emissions. In fact, the Big Block went out of production when emission regulations came into force – the engines couldn’t compete.

Nevertheless, if you want a powerful fun car, the Chevy Big Block V8 engine is a good way to go, probably with the 427 cu in unit, which was derived from the CanAm racing engines, which had aluminum big blocks Chevy. The standard engines retained cast iron blocks, but you can still get a |street or race car with one of these – up to 1,000 bhp with supercharging.

How do you start this project? Get the engine with the best big block Chevy specs you can. Then, get an old Chevy V-8, then you will want to dismantle the engine, get all the parts inspected to make sure they are OK, and get the cylinders bored out by 0.020 in to make sure that you are starting with a good engine. This means new pistons of course. Then, you will replace all parts that are worn out, like bearings, valves and valve springs, although you may also need to get the crankshaft reground.

Or, you can buy an aluminum block and heads, and build the engine from there – this would be best Chevy Big Block V8 for racing, and will be a great basis for a very powerful engine.
