Type 2 Diabetes and Hearing Loss

Results from a five year hearing study involving more than people has shown that people with have hearing loss in significantly larger numbers than people diabetes. The hearing loss usually starts at an early age and will progress as the diabetics grow older.

The study did not assess whether neuropathy associated with diabetes or other vascular problems has any impact on hearing loss. They study did state that other factors such as exposure to very loud noises will tend to account for a larger percentage of hearing loss than diabetes alone.

However, the widespread nature of type 2 diabetes means the loss of hearing associated with this disease will be substantial, especially when combined with the impact of diabetes on eyesight.

They suggest that usual care for people with diabetes include questions about hearing function and referral for hearing assessment.

Edward A. Maznio, President and Founder of PurTone Hearing Centers of Arizona who provides stated. “The findings of this study are as applicable in the United States and particularly in our Arizona communities as it is in Australia. The findings underscore the diversity of causes of hearing loss and the need for early detection. Early detection and non-medical correction of hearing loss in Arizona is our primary goal. Early detection allows us to help keep our patient’s lives on track by staying connected to the world around them.
