Mexican Auto Insurance Tips
Mexican car insurance is prudent if you need to drive in Mexico where accident rates are higher than in many other countries. In addition to that, having health insurance while in Mexico is quite important.
Don’t forget, some health insurance policies from other countries will decline medical expenses while you are in Mexico. That means if you have international auto insurance for your trip to Mexico and if any unexpected problems occur, none of that may be covered by your policy. You might have hear that, Mexico has a health system that gives free medical care for its citizens but there is no provision for offering the same thing for foreigners.
The driving conditions in Mexico is very tough and dangerous. It is not like you are used to where you live. The rocks and holes of the road sides may bring problems and the severity of accidents will be much worse than in the United States.
The truth is that many Mexican auto insurance agents do not sell auto insurance that covers emergency medical assistance or legal assistance. The emergency medical assistance services are so restricted among most auto insurance carriers that the Red Cross and a whole host of other international relief agencies use ONLY ONE company for their travel to Mexico and throughout the rest of the world.
In many policies there are allowances for liability, medical coverage, and road side assistance. Liability coverage means damages that you cause to someone else will be covered. Medical coverage of course covers any medical expenses you or your passenger might receive. The road side assistance option usually only covers certain things, so please be familiar with those items and be especially familiar with what is not covered if the car breaks down. You might even want to add on provisions for car theft or vandalism if it is available. It depends on what you are comfortable with.
Another thing to consider when shopping around for your auto insurance option is the deductible. You should try a policy that has a fixed deductible so that there will be no surprises at a later time. If this is not available, then consider a company that gives you a list of all deductible levels.
Make sure to buy the correct insurance for your travels to Mexico. Shop around online a bit and get as much information as you possibly can well before your trip. Plan for auto insurance as you would any other aspect of your travels!
