Morphy Richards 40740 Review
The Morphy Richards 40740 iron is one of the best morphy richards irons in their range. It’s comfortable to use, resists scaling, and produces plenty of steam to help you glide over tough fabrics, such as linen.
It gives roughly 16 minutes of maximum steam from one tank, so you won’t have to refill too much, and the continuous-steam output can be adjusted, allowing you to choose exactly as much or as little as you need. It’s a heavy steam iron, but it produces sharp results whatever the fabric.
The continuous steam won’t work on very low heat settings, but you can still use the steam-shot button to give you a quick burst. Vertical steaming results aren’t too bad for synthetics, but they’re disappointing for cottons, and the weight of the iron could be a problem if you re vertical steaming for any length of time.
The handle has a soft coating and the ceramic plate glides well, so you won’t have to press too hard. This Morphy Richards iron faired well in our durability test, producing 150 hours of steam before it needed descaling, and the self-clean function is so effective that the iron is as good as new afterwards.
This model benefits from an audible temperature alert, and an auto shut-off safety feature - the iron shuts off after 30 seconds if it’s left on its soleplate, or eight minutes standing on it’s heel. The water tank is easy to fill, but you can t see the fill level until you switch the iron on, as the container is almost opaque until illuminated from within.
Pros: Good resistance to scaling, water tank lasts well, self cleaning, audible temperature alert, auto shut-off, quiet, works well on linen
Cons: Water tank fill level can only be seen when switched on, heavy
