Future Nuclear Plants Insurance Crisis
As the number of homes and industries multiply in the UK, the demand for more power output will follow. With the necessity for more power, more power-producing facilities will be needed and what kind of power facility mode of existing power source emits more power and less pollution? None other than nuclear power.
There are ten reported new nuclear reactors set to be opened soon and insuring them is said to cause a hefty sum. Environmental compensation has also been added among the liability claims along with personal injury, property and death claims. According to the government, if the insurance industries within the country fail to fulfill this rule, they will have to provide backing for it with the national treasury which could meet some opposition from UK taxpayers.
The government and insurance companies acknowledge that the ability to meet the liability guidelines regarding the use of nuclear energy is far from solved. There is a plan to operate the first site not later than 2018 and with the current financial crisis still plaguing everyone, numerous consultations are being made.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change was forced to hire PricewaterhouseCoopers to provide assessment and suggest a resolution to the present insurance situation. They also consider getting some public consultation in order to meet the insurance liability convention guidelines on time.
The necessity for a more efficient power supply that causes lesser emissions is an important priority for the government. Nuclear powered electricity will dramatically boost the UKs power output, but the environmental risks that comes with it provides a larger consequence for all sectors if not properly taken care of.
