Cork for flooring is harvested from a cork oak tree. This is not like when hardwood floors are made because the cork tree is not cut down to produce the flooring. The cork from the cork tree is harvested every nine years. One side of the tree is stripped of the cork and this is the cork that is used to manufacture the flooring. In turn the tree is not killed and the forest is unharmed, like new hardwood floors. It is a good choice for the environment if you chose cork floors.
Cork trees can live for a couple centuries this is because they are not killed in this cork harvesting process. The process that is used to obtain hardwood floors is one that kills the trees and the new trees need to grow for up to fourty years before becoming mature.
